The quarter penny dates back to King Håkon V's time on the Norwegian throne (1299 - 1319). The silver quarterpenny was used as a means of payment for smaller amounts during the Hanseatic period.

The C-shaped arches with their features from rose painting and wood carving were typical of the Neo-Cocco era in Norway.
