The answer is not as obvious as many think – it varies with tradition, culture, and not least, personal taste. Here, we go through what is common in Norway, where the customs come from, and what you can choose for yourself.
The tradition
In Norway
In Norway, there is a long tradition of wearing the engagement ring on the ring finger of the right hand. This distinguishes us from many other countries, where the engagement ring is usually worn on the left hand.
A common explanation is the connection to the heart: placing the right hand over the heart has long been a symbol of loyalty and sincerity, and therefore several countries in Northern and Eastern Europe – including Norway, Germany, and Russia – have made the right hand the norm for the engagement ring.

Why do some people wear it on their left hand?
Although the right hand is most common here in Norway, some still choose the ring finger of the left hand – and historically, this is actually the older custom. It originates from ancient Egypt, where it was believed that a "love vein" (vena amoris) ran directly from the ring finger of the left hand to the heart. This belief is the reason why the left hand is standard in countries such as the USA and large parts of Western Europe.
In other words, there is no single correct answer – only two different traditions, both of which are about the same thing: symbolically connecting the ring to the heart.

What happens to the rings during and after the wedding?
During the wedding ceremony itself, many move their engagement ring from the right hand to the left, so that the wedding ring can be worn on the right hand instead. After the wedding, it is therefore common in Norway to wear the wedding ring on the right hand, with the engagement ring on the left – while others choose to wear both rings together on the same finger, especially if they are designed to stack neatly.
