How to find the right ring size at home
Are you ordering a ring online, secretly planning a proposal, or just trying to find out what size you wear yourself? Then having the correct ring size is one of the most important things to get right. A ring that is too tight can be uncomfortable to wear every day, while a ring that is too large can easily fall off and get lost. The good news is that you can get a good estimate of your ring size from home.
In this guide, we show you three reliable methods, a complete size chart, and some tips to help you get the right size the first time.
Why ring sizing is not an exact science
Our fingers are not always the same size. The size can vary by half a size or more depending on:
- Temperature – fingers swell slightly in heat and contract in cold
- Time of day – most people have slightly thicker fingers in the evening than in the morning
- Fluid balance – salty food, exercise, and pregnancy can cause temporary swelling
- Which finger – the ring finger and middle finger often have different sizes, and the left and right hand can also differ
The goal is therefore not to find a millimeter-perfect number, but a good and stable average.

Method 1
Measure a ring you already have
The simplest and most accurate method is to measure a ring that already fits well on the finger in question.
- Find a ring that fits comfortably – neither too tight nor too loose
- Measure the inner diameter in millimeters with a ruler, preferably across the center of the ring
- Compare the measurement with the size chart below
Tip: Feel free to measure two or three different rings to double-check that you get the same result.

Method 2
Thread or paper
Don't have a ring to measure? Then you can use a thin thread, a strip of paper, or a piece of string.
- Wrap the thread or paper around your finger, where the ring will sit
- Mark the point where the end meets the beginning
- Measure the length with a ruler – this is the inner circumference (in millimeters)
- Use the formula: Diameter = Circumference ÷ 3.14, or find the circumference directly in the table below
This method is a good guide, but a little less accurate than measuring an existing ring, as thread and paper can easily stretch or be pulled too tight.
| Norsk ringstørrelse | Indre diameter (mm) | Indre omkrets (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 44 | 14,0 | 44,0 |
| 46 | 14,6 | 46,0 |
| 48 | 15,3 | 48,0 |
| 50 | 15,9 | 50,0 |
| 52 | 16,6 | 52,0 |
| 54 | 17,2 | 54,0 |
| 56 | 17,8 | 56,0 |
| 58 | 18,5 | 58,0 |
| 60 | 19,1 | 60,0 |
| 62 | 19,7 | 62,0 |
| 64 | 20,4 | 64,0 |
De vanligste ringstørrelsene for dameringer ligger mellom 50 og 56, mens herreringer ofte ligger mellom 58 og 64 – men dette varierer fra person til person.

If the ring is to mean something very special – such as an engagement ring – we always recommend a professional measurement. We use ring sizers that provide an exact result, and we can also advise on comfort fit, width, and how different ring designs feel on the hand.
This is also the solution if you are planning a surprise proposal: borrow a ring the person already wears on the correct finger, or ask a friend or family member who knows their size.
Finding the right ring size at home involves measuring correctly, accounting for natural variations, and choosing a safe solution when it truly matters – such as for an engagement.
