Jewelry maintenance

If you take care of your jewelry and give it a little extra loving care from time to time, it will bring you a lot of joy year after year. Here we give you tips on how to maintain your jewelry in the best possible way.

Gold jewelry

Yellow gold jewelry is durable and easy to keep looking good. Scratches don't show up as easily.
After a long period of use, they appear with a beautiful patina. You can wash and clean them yourself. Wash the jewelry in warm soapy water with a drop of ammonia added, or use a special product that you can buy from the jeweler. Use a soft toothbrush to
get to all places. Rinse in clean water and dry well, preferably with a hairdryer.
If the jewelry is particularly dirty or scratched, a visit to the jeweler may be a good idea. Here
The jewelry is cleaned using ultrasound and can be polished if necessary.
In exposed areas, wear and tear will occur on the jewelry over time. Links in chains and bracelets, and rings are usually the most susceptible. Also check that the spring (back piece) on the earrings is tight. You can easily tighten these yourself using a small pair of pliers, or let a jeweler help you.

Gold jewelry with stones – real or synthetic – should be treated in the same way as gold.

White gold is yellow gold mixed with the white metal palladium. White gold is quite yellow in color, and to get the shiny shiny surface, jewelry is plated with rhodium. When this coating eventually wears off, the jewelry becomes slightly yellow or grayish. The jewelry then needs a “freshening up”. Bring your jewelry to the jeweler for rhodium plating, and it will shine like new again.
Gold jewelry with stones
Gold jewelry with stones – real or synthetic – should be treated in the same way as gold. Please note that porous stones such as turquoise, lapis lazuli, opal, coral and amber cannot withstand soap or ammonia. Instead, they should be wiped with a clean, soft cloth. Please note that some stones and pearls are glued on and may come loose with use.
of too hot water.

Diamond jewelry

Diamonds are among the hardest minerals that exist, and it is practically impossible to scratch a diamond. Creams and soap products, on the other hand, will form a coating and make the diamond dull. You can avoid this by taking your diamond jewelry off when you shower and wash your hands. Also avoid using your diamond jewelry with strong chemicals and store the jewelry so that it does not rub against each other. This will avoid streaks and wear in the gold around the diamond. It is important that Arven or another jeweler service your jewelry regularly. We make sure that all claws are intact and that diamonds are seated properly. Diamonds can fall out if the setting is worn. Diamond jewelry can be washed in the same way as gold jewelry.

Pearls

Pearls are an organic material and should be worn frequently to maintain their luster. They draw moisture from the skin and can “dry out” if stored incorrectly. Pearls should be stored in a dark place, separate from other jewelry, and preferably wrapped in silk, not cotton.
Wipe the pearls after use with a soft, damp, clean cloth. This will prevent cosmetic products from damaging the pearls. If the pearls are particularly dirty, you can purchase a pearl cleaner from your jeweler that will gently clean the pearls. DO NOT use other chemicals on pearls.
Remove pearl necklaces at night, as both the string and the pearls quickly wear out and become dirty. If you are a frequent wearer of pearl necklaces, have your jeweler check your necklace once a year and rethread it if necessary. The necklace should also be cleaned occasionally.

Silver jewelry

Silver jewelry that has become dull and dark can be cleaned in the same way as gold. However, untreated silver will darken over time. It reacts with sulfur in the air and tarnishes (oxidizes). In this case, washing will not be sufficient, and special products are needed. There are a number of different polishes available for purchase, all of which are easy to use. Be careful not to use strong cleaners on jewelry that has oxidized (dark) areas. Ask us for advice, or at your local jeweler.
